Support for Those Enrolled in the mindDog Program

Living with a mental health condition can bring daily challenges, but the companionship and support of a well-trained dog can make a world of difference.  The mindDog program exists to help people train their own dogs to become psychiatric assistance dogs, offering calm, comfort, and confidence in everyday life.  Once trained and assessed, these dogs can accompany their handler into public spaces such as shops, hospitals, restaurants, and public transport under the legal protection of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

At Smart Choice Dog Training, we provide guidance and practical support for handlers working through the mindDog program. Our role is to help you and your dog build the skills needed for success, both in day to day life and in preparation for the Public Access Test (PAT).

Our sessions focus on whatever you would like. Such as:

  • Building reliable foundation skills (e.g. loose lead walking, polite greetings, settling in public, )

  • Strengthening the dog-guardian bond through clear communication and positive reinforcement

  • Developing appropriate responses to distractions and novel environments

  • Creating calm, predictable behaviour that helps you feel confident taking your dog into the community

Training is tailored to suit your unique needs and your dog's temperament and experience.  The number and frequency of sessions will vary depending on your goals and progress.  Sessions can be held in your home or at a suitable location within 30 minutes of Croydon. A travel fee may apply depending on your location.

Let’s work together to build skills that make life more accessible, for both you and your dog.
